Unfortunately, it isn't quite as clear-cut as you might hope. There are many factors at play when it comes to costing logo design. These include:
The logo design brief
You're very unlikely to get a logo design cost without providing a brief (unless you opt for a Fiverrr logo, which is likely to be very hit-and-miss in terms of quality)
Whether your brief is straightforward or not is likely to be a major contributing factor to the cost of logo design. If you have a clear idea in your mind, and it's easy enough to bring to life, then you can expect a much lower cost. However, if you don't quite know what you want and are looking for something more conceptual, the costs can easily rack up.
Example A: You are a builder who has their own business. You want a logo that includes a house and your business name. This is very straightforward and shouldn't take more than a day or two to produce a couple of options.
Example B: You are a consultancy business working across multiple sectors. You want something that matches your vision and values. This is likely to take 3-5 days for initial concepts to be returned and the upfront work that the designer will need to do to understand your business, values and how you want to be seen will increase.
Amends
Ordinarily, graphic designers will include one or two rounds of amends to each stage within their cost. It is incredibly rare for a design brief to be nailed first-time, and designers know this.
If you think the feedback, amends or approval process on your side will take more time than that, it's worth asking for additional rounds to be added to your quote.
Our advice would be to ask for them as an optional, with the option to remove the cost if not required.
Timescales
How quickly you want your logo will be another major factor in cost. If you're happy for work to be fitted in alongside other work, then you will likely get a more favourable rate. If, on the other side, you need a logo ASAP, you might have to pay a premium rate to accommodate a rejigging of workloads.
Your chosen designer or agency
The most important factor in logo design cost has to be the person you choose to do it. There are two core options available:
Freelancer
Choosing a freelancer is going to be the lowest-cost option. Freelancers have fewer overheads and therefore can be more competitive in cost. However, there are additional factors in play. The experience of said freelancer will have a heavy influence on their quoted costs.
A freelance graphic designer with limited experience will be unable to justify a considerable day rate, so will naturally cost less. However, the downside to a low cost is more than likely a reduction in quality.
Freelance graphic designers with limited experience might charge in the region of £100-200 per day.
A freelancer will more experience is going to cost you more than the example above, but you're likely to benefit from greater quality work at a much faster speed.
Freelance graphic designers with much more experience might charge in the region of £350-450 per day on average.
Agency
Choosing an agency to design your next logo is beneficial. They will be home to the best of the best when it comes to specialisms. And, like with any creative job, having many heads around a table providing ideas can be very beneficial to the creative process.
But using an agency does come with a significant cost increase when compared with a freelancer. Even the more expensive freelancers can come out considerably cheaper than an agency.
Using an agency brings additional costs with it, for example, the account management time to respond to queries, attend meetings, brief your requirements into design and then the QA of work before it comes back to you.
An agency might charge you anything from £750-£1,250 per day to deliver work.
How much do graphic designers charge?
As we've explored above, graphic designers charge different amounts based on experience and the requirements within your brief.
Here are some rough freelance rate ranges for different graphic designer roles.
